Autonomous Ride-Sharing

Around a decade or so ago, in 2013 the hype around autonomous driving was quite palpable. The solutions themselves seemed very much about which company could produce their own vehicle. It felt better to ask, why not just have a common public transport platform that each of these companies buys into and invests to create their own ride sharing services? This made more sense from a systems, sustainabilty and complexity stand point. A public platform service, or public transportation system if you will, could hasten development and have the companies compete on services. It was for me an alternative view of what autnomous ride sharing could be that would not simply be replacing public transport but complementing it.

What if the personal automobile could be replaced slowly with a commuting platform that standardized urban commuting.
